Campervan Hire in Perth: What You Actually Get
Most people searching for campervan hire in Perth are not attached to the van. They want to drive somewhere good, sleep near it, and not spend the trip in motels. Campervan is just the word that comes to mind.
It is worth a few minutes to work out whether it is the right word for your trip, because in Western Australia the choice decides where you are allowed to go. We hire 4WD campers rather than vans, so we have an interest here, and we will be plain about where a van is the better call.
Campervan vs 4WD camper: the difference in one paragraph
A campervan is a van you sleep inside. The bed, and usually a small kitchen, are in the body of the vehicle. It is built for sealed roads and caravan parks, it is comfortable in bad weather, and you can stand up in the taller ones.
A 4WD camper is a four wheel drive with a rooftop tent on top. You sleep above the vehicle. It is higher clearance, it has proper tyres and recovery gear, and it will go places a van physically cannot and contractually may not.
Neither is better. They answer different trips.
Where a campervan can actually go in WA
This is the part that matters most, and the part hire companies are vaguest about.
| Trip | Campervan | 4WD camper |
|---|---|---|
| Perth to Margaret River and the South West | Yes | Yes |
| Perth to Kalbarri and the Pinnacles | Yes | Yes |
| Perth to Exmouth on the Coral Coast | Yes, sealed all the way | Yes |
| Lancelin or Wilbinga sand | No | Yes |
| Francois Peron National Park | No | Yes |
| Karijini gorge access roads | Mostly no | Yes |
| Cape Leveque and the Dampier Peninsula | Sealed road only | Yes |
| The Gibb River Road | No, and not permitted | Yes |
| Free camping away from caravan parks | Limited | Yes |
Almost every campervan hire agreement in Australia prohibits unsealed roads. That is not a suggestion, it is the clause that voids your insurance. If your itinerary has a national park access road in it, read the agreement before you book anything.
What campervan hire in Perth costs, honestly
Van hire in Perth generally starts lower per day than a 4WD camper. If your whole trip is sealed road and caravan parks, a van will usually be the cheaper way to do it, and we would rather tell you that than have you book the wrong vehicle from us.
Where the comparison narrows is in what is included. Our rates start at $250 a day for the MU-X Explorer and run to $400 for the INEOS Family+, and every vehicle includes the rooftop tent, bedding, fridge, dual battery, solar, camp furniture, recovery gear and unlimited kilometres. There is no separate line for the kitchen kit or the camp chairs, and no kilometre cap to watch.
Compare total trip cost rather than the daily headline. A cheaper daily rate with a 250 kilometre cap is not cheaper on a Perth to Exmouth run.
The middle option people miss
If the appeal of a van is not having to put up a tent after a long drive, the MU-X Explorer is worth a look. It is a wagon, you sleep inside it, there is nothing to set up, and it still has low range and proper tyres. It is the closest thing we run to a van, and it goes places a van cannot.
At $250 a day it is also our cheapest vehicle.
When we would tell you to hire a campervan instead
Plainly:
- Your trip is entirely sealed road and you will stay in caravan parks
- You are travelling in winter and want to be inside in the evening
- Someone in the group cannot manage a ladder to a rooftop tent
- You want the lowest possible daily rate and the itinerary genuinely does not need clearance
If two or more of those are true, hire a van. It is the right vehicle and you will enjoy the trip more.
When a 4WD camper is the only real answer
- The Gibb River Road, Karijini, Francois Peron, Cape Leveque beyond the seal, or any beach driving
- Free camping and remote sites rather than caravan parks
- Any itinerary where you want to change your mind about a side road

Campervan hire in Perth: common questions
Can you take a hired campervan on unsealed roads in WA?
Almost never. Nearly every campervan hire agreement in Australia prohibits unsealed roads, and driving on them can void your insurance. National park access roads, beach tracks and the Gibb River Road all need a 4WD that is permitted to use them.
Is a campervan cheaper than a 4WD camper in Perth?
Per day, usually yes. For a trip that is all sealed road and caravan parks, a van is often the cheaper option. Compare the total trip cost though: our 4WD campers start at $250 a day with unlimited kilometres, bedding, fridge, solar and camp gear included, while a cheaper rate with a kilometre cap can cost more on a long run like Perth to Exmouth.
Can I drive Perth to Exmouth in a campervan?
Yes. The road from Perth to Exmouth on the Coral Coast is sealed all the way. Side trips such as Francois Peron National Park or beach driving need a 4WD.
Is there a camper I can sleep inside without a rooftop tent?
Yes. The MU-X Explorer is a 4WD wagon you sleep inside, with nothing to set up. It is our closest thing to a campervan and our cheapest vehicle at $250 a day.
Can I pick up in Perth and drop off in Broome or Darwin?
Yes. Every vehicle hires from our Perth depot, with a one-way option to Broome or Darwin.
