Finding the Perfect Vehicle for Off-Road Explorations

Choosing the right 4WD is key for a fun and successful adventure. In Perth, there are many rental options. It is essential to consider your needs and your trip’s requirements.

Are you going on your own or with a group? How much off-road ability do you need? What essential gear and camping supplies do you need for your trip? Answering these questions will help you find the best 4WD for your Australian adventure.

What you actually get

Five vehicles, and the honest differences between them.

Where a Perth hire actually takes you

Perth is a good starting point because the country changes so fast in every direction.

Two hours south and you are in the karri forests and limestone coast around Margaret River, which is sealed road all the way and suits the MU-X as well as anything. Two hours north and Lancelin’s dunes give you soft sand driving within a morning of the city. Head east into the Wheatbelt in spring and the wildflowers run for hundreds of kilometres.

Go further and it gets serious. Perth to Exmouth along the Coral Coast is roughly 1,250 kilometres and takes in the Pinnacles, Kalbarri, Shark Bay and Ningaloo. Perth to Broome is 2,240 kilometres. Perth to Darwin is the full traverse, and most people give it three weeks.

If you want a shorter shakedown before committing to any of that, the 4WD tracks near Perth are where to do it.

One-way hire, and why it matters

You do not have to bring the vehicle back.

We run depots in Perth, Broome and Darwin, which means you can collect in Perth and drop in Broome, collect in Broome and drop in Darwin, or drive the whole traverse and fly home from the other end. For a long trip that changes the maths completely: you spend your time going somewhere rather than half of it driving back the way you came.

Why people book with us rather than a chain

Luke and Mel Wales own the business and run it from Perth. When you ring, you get one of them, not a call centre working from a script about a depot they have never visited.

That matters more than it sounds. Most of our customers are planning a trip they have never done before, in country where the wrong decision about timing or a river crossing is expensive. The route planning that comes with the vehicle is the part people mention most often in our reviews, and we have more than 180 of them at five stars.

The fleet is small on purpose. Five vehicles, all maintained by the people who hire them out, all set up the same way, all genuinely capable of the country we send them into.

If you came here looking for a van rather than a four wheel drive, we have written an honest comparison of campervan hire in Perth against a rooftop-tent 4WD, including where each one is allowed to go.
