What a 4WD camper hire actually includes

A 4WD rental usually means a vehicle and a long list of extras you pay for separately. Ours does not work that way. Every four wheel drive we hire leaves the depot already set up to sleep in and already equipped for remote country, because adding it later at the counter is how people end up short of something at the worst moment.

Included on every vehicle, at no extra charge:

• Rooftop tent or interior bed, with bedding
• Fridge, dual battery and solar
• Camp table, chairs and cooking gear
• Recovery gear, all-terrain tyres and a full-size spare
• Unlimited kilometres, with no cap to watch

There is no shopping list of add-ons and no conversation at pickup about what the vehicle is not allowed to do.

The fleet is small on purpose. Five vehicles, all maintained by the people who hire them out, all prepared the same way, all genuinely capable of the country we send them into.

Where you can collect one

We run three depots, and which one you start from usually decides the trip more than which vehicle you pick.

• Perth for the South West, the Coral Coast and the tracks within a couple of hours of the city
• Broome for the Gibb River Road, the Kimberley and Cape Leveque
• Darwin for Kakadu, Litchfield and Nitmiluk

You do not have to bring the vehicle back to where you started. A one-way fee applies, charged once, and a lot of our longer hires are collected at one depot and dropped at another.

What it costs to rent a four wheel drive

Rates run from $250 a day for the MU-X Explorer to $400 for the INEOS Family+, and what looks like a higher daily rate than a car rental is doing a different job. You are not paying for a vehicle, you are paying for a vehicle plus the camping setup plus the recovery gear plus the kilometres.

Compare the total cost of the trip rather than the headline day rate. A cheaper vehicle with a kilometre cap, no tent and no fridge is rarely cheaper by the end of a fortnight in Western Australia.
